Colin has been working in wood for over 25 years, – having completed his five-year apprenticeship in furniture – making in 1997 at the prestigious Edward Barnsley Workshop, he stayed on as a craftsman for a further eight years.
Since April 2005, he has been self – employed working on furniture commission work alongside speculative pieces and has taken part in a number of exhibitions.
Sculptural Turning is a speciality that has been developed alongside my furniture career since the early years – producing a finished article in a much shorter period of time. He likes to specialise in his sculptural square, triangular pieces and forms with textured finishes. These coloured and textured finishes increase the audience of his work, not just wood – but prospective clients who collect ceramics and stonework. All the pieces are turned on the lathe, but with his experience in furniture, making some of the techniques used overlap between the two forms of creation.
In addition letter carving is undertaken to commission and turning courses are given at his workshop. Ideas and inspirations are taken from architecture, natural formations and occurrences. His work has been awarded recognition nationally as well as locally – He was awarded (Guild Mark 229) from The Worshipful Company of Furniture makers in 1998. Colin was invited to join “The Register of Professional Turners” in 2008.
